Perfect Days

Dumfries & Galloway is a creative haven – bring your sketch book when you stay at Corriedown, there is so much to inspire you on the doorstep – if you want to find out what motivates the many local artists, Spring Fling is always a highlight, it takes place in May and artists open their studios to the public, you can explore, marvel and purchase.

There is lots of opportunity to combine art and outdoor activity.

Crawick Multiverse is in their words and we can’t deny it is an ‘amazing land art for you to explore and enjoy’, you can walk, picnic, fly your kites or immerse yourself in the natural art forms. Events and performances take place from spring through to autumn.

The Striding Archers, near Moniaive are a series of stone sandstone arches built by international artist Andy Goldsworthy. The full route is 9km/6mile walk and climbs up through the forest and moor land and along the hills, you don’t fancy the full trek? At the very least visit the first arch which is built into a byre, it’s located just up the hill from the car park at Cairnheah.

Bring your mountain bike with you or hire one locally and explore the 7stanes, there are a number of routes across Dumfries and Galloway which are suitable for beginners to experienced mountain bikers – keeping with the creative theme, at each 7stanes location you’ll find a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend!

There is no escaping the rich history of the area, and it is worth making a wee visit to Ellisland Museum & Farm, the home of Robert Burns and by all accounts where he wrote some of his greatest works including Auld Lang Syne. Not just a museum there are regular music events celebrating the best of his work.

Drumlanrig Castle – well it’s certainly large compared to other Scottish castles, 120 rooms, 4 towers and 17 turrets. There is an impressive art collection including work from Rembrandt, Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. It’s not just about the castle, there are rivers, lochs, woodland and farmland across the estate and a number of impressive walking, cycling/ mountain biking routes across the grounds.

Alternatively, just relax around house…Corriedow is an ideal base for a secluded getaway, just chill with a good book by the fire, go for a walk or go star gazing from the garden on one of those dark dark nights.
