Superior Large Lodges Scotland

Magnificent 5 bedroom luxury highland house

Looking for large lodges Scotland for a family holiday? An cos could be the place for you. Located in a spectacular area of the Scottish Highlands which is remote enough to make you feel like you’re getting away from everything and yet only 90 mins from Inverness — the drive there, no matter the direction you’re coming from, is through some of the most striking scenery Scotland has to offer.

The pretty picture postcard village of Shieldaig has everything you could want on your doorstep. As well as a village shop, a bustling pub and restaurant, and a café, Shieldaig also has the Loch Torridon smokehouse for delicious freshly hot or cold smoked salmon, which you can buy for dining at home, either in the large light dining room, or al fresco in the garden.

Perfect for a family gathering or getaway with friends

Large lodges Scotland, An Cos  is very impressive with striking views from all the main rooms and offers flexible sleeping arrangements: upstairs – four large bedrooms and three bathrooms (two ensuite); ground floor – bathroom/steamroom, separate wc and study/fifth bedroom, which make the house the perfect choice for a family gathering or getaway with friends. With tasteful décor, quality furnishings and fittings, there’s no doubt this is stylish high-end holiday accommodation.

The most stunning room of An Cos is the Master bedroom upstairs. With a walk-in closet, an open fireplace, a fabulous ensuite with gorgeous clawfoot roll-top bathtub under a skylight, Arran Aromatics toiletries, soft bath towels, and cloud-like bedding on a super-king sized bed, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re staying in a 5 star luxury hotel.

Stunning views of the village, island and loch

As for relaxation spots, downstairs, the sumptuous slate bathroom doubles as a steam room, accommodating up to two people, and the large living room is stylishly furnished and spacious with top quality modern amenities alongside an antique chess board and an open fireplace. There are also two comfy sofas in the dining room bay window commanding stunning views of the village, island and loch, where you can happily sit for hours watching the ever-changing scene. You can chill out and watch a few box sets on Netflix or a DVD or CD from the extensive collection. There is Wifi too, if you need to keep in touch.

The kitchen is exceptional

At An Cos, even the kitchen is exceptional. Decorated a gorgeous pastel blue (which mirrors the colours of the loch viewed from the large windows and window seat), it has all the best equipment you could possibly need during a self-catering stay, including gadgets like a Nespresso machine, juicer, bread machine, food processor as well as a double oven, microwave, warming drawer and dishwasher, plus a large range of pots, pans, crockery, and other such implements, all of a high quality. There’s also a wine cooler, ample cupboard space and a double sink. Outside there’s a dining table and chairs with other seating so you’ll be well-prepared for meals out in the garden overlooking the water and Shieldaig Island. There is also an excellent Utility room with washing and drying machines plus a Boot Room with plenty of seating and hanging space for all your outdoor gear.

it’s a great year-round destination and If you’re visiting during the winter months, the house has underfloor heating and lots of logs so you’ll always be cosy. There is a wide selection of books and bookshelves in most rooms and with the many plush sofas and comfy armchairs, you’re sure to find a snug spot to curl up in for a few hours reading whilst enjoying the views.

Delicious home-made scones and cake

If the comfort and luxury of An Cos wasn’t enough to draw you in, the owners also include thoughtful touches throughout such as guide books, information about local activities, recipe books, stationery, picnic equipment, and everything you need to make you feel at home – including kitchen essentials such as oils, vinegars, herbs & spices, clingfilm/foil, dishwasher tablets etc, plus complimentary Arran Aromatics in all the bathrooms.

On arrival you will be welcomed by Fiona the local House Manager and a roaring fire and a tea tray with delicious home-made scones and cake. There’ll also be a plate of salmon and other goodies from Shieldaig’s own smokehouse in the fridge.

A great example of large lodge Scotland, it’s an utterly charming home in a stunning Highland location — just make sure you book early as possible, as with so many returning guests the house gets booked up well in advance. To make the most of it stay for at least a week because you will never want to leave!

Perfect Days

Explore the incredible landscapes around the house and enjoy a walk along the Aird path, which starts directly behind An Cos to Loch Torridon, a fantastic spot with incredible views of the Torridon peaks.

Go for a spectacular drive over Bealach na Ba, the UK’s highest ascent road – single-track with hairpin bends surrounded by steep mountains – which has breathtaking views over to Rassay and Skye from the top and enjoy lunch in the award-winning Applecross Inn.

For experienced hillwalkers with a good head for heights or Munro-baggers there are a wealth of options in the area including the delightful traverse of Beinn Alligin or the spectacular ridge of Liathach. For sea lovers, hire equipment or learn to kayak with Shieldaig Adventures who can also arrange boat trips, fishing, bike hire as well as mountain guiding and other activities.

Treat yourself to lunch at the famous Kishorn Seafood bar. Amazing prawns and fresh scallops with incredible views. Feeling flush? How about a gastronomic dinner at the nearby Loch Torridon hotel, complete with its legendary whisky bar. Fancy afternoon tea and cake? Try Nanny’s in the village, Jo’s café in Torridon or the Bealach café. You certainly won’t go hungry around here!

Enjoy lunch in the garden or a picnic by the loch and soak up the breathtaking scenery. Pick up some local shellfish or smoked/hot-poached salmon from nearby Torridon Smokehouse.

Explore the west coast – take a road trip and visit Kishorn’s artists’ galleries, Plockton, one of the most scenic villages in Scotland or visit the iconic Eileen Donan Castle, the most photographed castle in Scotland. In the other direction, the expansive sandy beaches of Gairloch or the incredible tropical gardens of Inverewe – if you can bear to tear yourself away from An Cos and Shieldaig.
